HCR Manor Care, Job Corps Team To Ease Nursing Shortage
Posted on: 06/09/2003

TOLEDO, Ohio -- HCR Manor Care and the Keystone Job Corps Center have launched a Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) school in Drums, Pennsylvania, the first of what is expected to be several LPN schools HCR Manor Care will develop in partnership with the Job Corps.

"The health care profession is experiencing a critical shortage of trained nursing professionals, a shortage that will not end soon," says Patricia Gillette, HCR Manor Care's assistant vice president of workforce development. "Our partnership with the Job Corps recognizes the need to take proactive action to help ease this shortage. The Job Corps' well-regarded and recognized training expertise makes it an ideal partner to help us carry this initiative forward."

"Job Corps has been providing vocational and academic skills to America's youth for almost 40 years," says Tom Fitzwater, the Keystone Job Corps Center director. "This LPN program is a welcome addition to our curriculum, and I am delighted to see the tremendous interest from students." The Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing approved the center's proposal for operation of the program.

The one-year LPN program requires 828 hours of classroom instruction and 728 hours of clinical learning at various health care providers, including ManorCare Health Services in Kingston, Pennsylvania. After taking classes in nursing concepts and fundamentals, students will tackle courses in surgery, pharmacology, obstetrics, pediatrics, mental health, community health and leadership. Fourteen students are currently enrolled in the program, which is licensed by the state to teach up to 15 students at a time.

HCR Manor Care began its national partnership with Job Corps in 1999. Annually, it provides internships and job opportunities to nearly 400 Job Corps graduates in over 25 locations across the country.

Manor Care, Inc., through its operating group HCR Manor Care, is the leading owner and operator of long-term care centers in the United States. Job Corps is a federally funded program operated at 118 locations (including four in Pennsylvania) under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Labor
