Drinking Tea May Improve Bone Density
Posted on: 05/13/2002

NEW YORK - Those who drink tea for more than 10 years may have increased bone density.

Dr. Chih-Hsing Wu from the National Cheng Kung University Hospital in Tainan, Taiwan and his team of researchers report those who have a long-term tea habit have denser bones in three skeletal sites.

The report suggests fluoride, phytoestrogens and antioxidants in tea may be responsible for increasing density in those monitored. Participants in the study were asked about their tea-drinking habits, calcium consumption, alcohol use, and exercise and smoking habits. After polling more than 1,000 people, the team determined that those who drank tea weekly for more than 10 years had the highest rate of bone density out of all participants.
