Virgo Publishing and Assisted Living Success® magazine are proud to host and sponsor this track of certified courses approved for RCFE (Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly) Continuing Education Units in California. Courses are conducted by instructors who are RCFE vendor members through California's Department of Social Services. Applicable training materials will be distributed in each course.

The courses are pending CEU approval from additional national certification boards and, therefore, are appropriate for assisted-living administrators nationwide. Details regarding additional certification progress will be announced in subsequent advertisements.

1pm-5pm Care of the Resident With Dementia

Much is misunderstood about the term "dementia" and some of the new laws and regulations that have recently been enacted regarding care of residents with dementia. Residential care administrators must understand the cause of their clients' dementia, as well as the nature of the disease causing it in order to provide safe, therapeutic care. This new four-hour course is designed to provide administrators with the information and skills necessary to provide specialized care. Upon successful completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Define dementia and identify at least three of its causes
  • Describe medications commonly used to treat clients with dementia
  • Discuss essential components of a safe and nurturing residential care environment for clients with dementia
  • Describe components of an activity program for clients with dementia
  • Identify the components of a dementia care staff-training program.

Training staff members is one of the many required roles of residential care administrators and is a skill that must be learned. This three-hour course provides an excellent foundation in adult learning theory and is designed to introduce administrators and professionals to the information and skills necessary to conduct education and training classes for qualified staff. Upon successful completion of this program, participants will be able to: 

  • Describe the principals of adult learning
  • Identify teaching methodologies and appropriate educational situations for each of these methodologies
  • Identify essential presenter skills
  • Demonstrate the appropriate use of popular audiovisual training aids
  •  Demonstrate the development of an education or training objective and outline
  • Demonstrate the correct presentation of an education or training class.

12:30pm-3:30pm Use of Community and Support Services to Meet Resident Needs
