PRIMEDIA Workplace Learning's healthcare group released Assisted Living Best
Practices, a video-based training and education series developed for the management
and front-line staff of assisted-living facilities. More than two dozen leading experts in

ALFA University Teams With PharMerica and ServiceTRAC
ALFA University, an assisted-living education and training program sponsored by the
Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA), completed the nation's first
medication-training curriculum for the assisted-living industry. "Medication Training
for Assisted Living," a training manual that assists providers and residents with
improved health outcomes through quality training, is part of a 40-hour training program
that teaches caregivers about handling, dispensing and managing drug distribution,
including detailed instructions for medical assistance, supervision and documentation.
Topics include residents' rights, proper use of drug packages, accurate documentation, and
ordering and disposing of drugs. The program was developed in conjunction with PharMerica,

In other ALFA news, ServiceTRAC Inc., a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based training, research and
consulting company for the senior-housing industry, held the premier of the ALFA
University Sales Skills Boot Camp in December. Specifically designed for the
senior-housing industry, the three-day training incorporates activities into relationship
building, closing techniques, overcoming sales barriers, time management and community
outreach. Future boot camps are scheduled for May 12-14, in Chicago; July 21-23, in

The Northern Health Care Network, a not-for-profit geriatric and health-services
organization based in Rockland County, N.J., received a special acknowledgement from the
Rockland Economic Development Corp. for its construction of Assisted Living at Northern

Institute Video Teaches Crisis Prevention With Nonverbal Residents
The Brookfield, Wis.-based Crisis Prevention Institute released a new training video, Louder
Than Words: How to Intervene with Nonverbal Individuals, that teaches staff how to
prevent crisis situations from arising while dealing with nonverbal individuals, including
residents who have limited or no verbal skills because of autism, stroke, head injury,
Alzheimer's, etc. Tips, advice and exercises are offered for reducing frustration and
anxiety, preventing episodes of agitated or aggressive behavior, and intervening

Automed Acquires Baxter Assets
Buffalo Grove, Ill.-based Automed Technologies Inc., an automated,
medication-delivery-system company, signed a definitive agreement to acquire certain
assets of Baxter Healthcare Corp.'s Productivity Systems business located in Round Lake,
Ill. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
"Baxter's Productivity Systems products allow us to expand our product line and
provide an even greater range of powerful tools that deliver improved pharmacy performance
with greater efficiency to every type and size of pharmacy operation," said Duane

Cambridge Partners With Capital Consultants, Meridian Capital
Capital Consultants of Cleveland signed an agreement to serve as the sole correspondent
representative for the senior-housing and healthcare lending programs for Cambridge Realty
Capital, a merchant-banking firm, and senior-housing and healthcare lender. "The new
affiliation will give our business a national presence we haven't had before," said

NASHP Report Addresses Legal and Policy Issues
The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) released Is Bigger Better?
Legal and Policy Issues in Health Plan Mergers: A Guide for State Health Policy Makers,
a report written by Patricia Butler detailing the legal and policy issues confronted by
states as the number of health-plan mergers continues to rise. The report examines federal
and state frameworks for evaluating proposed health-plan mergers, technical issues in the
evaluation of mergers and state-policy considerations in reviewing mergers. According to
Butler, states will need to become increasingly involved in analyzing the effect of
health-plan mergers on local markets and ensure collaboration among state agencies. For
