Knowing Our Assets
Understanding
the industry at depth is important for every one of us today, especially
investors and key decision-makers. Robert Kramer and Harvey Singer’s
discussion about the current state of the industry on pages 18-19 is a critical
resource for information on the seniors housing industry. Looking at the
industry through the eyes of brokers and financiers is a fascinating flip side
to the coin. Kramer and Singer help us assess the industry, while on pages
20-21, Gary Lucas, Greg Scrine and John Fogarty expound on development activity
and financing.
To drill down even further, we take a peek at what some
administrators from the southwest are doing with their money on pages 22, 24 and
26. Not long ago I visited a financial advisor from Edward Jones, and I have to
admit I was jittery when it was time to expose my assets and liabilities. We
were only creating a financial plan for my future, but it meant making myself
vulnerable in a way I was not used to. I have to tip my hat to the
administrators in “In the Trenches,” for they must have felt something akin
to my time at Edward Jones. Perhaps through their sharing, you will be able to
think more constructively about your own budget plans.
Looking forward to seeing many of you at the National
Investment Center for the Seniors Housing and Care Industries conference.

Senior Issues Hit Home
A
few months back, I hit my first senior living crisis. My grandparents, who are
in their 90s living in Maryland, experienced their first real problem and boy
was I unprepared! My grandmother, at the ripe old age of 90, fell and broke her
hip leaving my 94-year-old grandfather with no one to help him.
I quickly went into action trying to figure out how to help
them and where to go.
The first thing I encountered is that things are dramatically
different state to state...what an eye opener! The amount of services and
opportunities were mind-boggling....I had just as many questions as I did
answers.
As I struggled through our family crisis, I quickly learned
what a great community there is in the marketplace serving our senior citizens.
The dedication and care I observed was second to none.
So you can imagine my excitement when given the opportunity to
become the publisher of Assisted Living Success.
What a great opportunity for me to be part of what I believe
to be one on the most important social issues in today’s society, the caring
of our aging population. I quickly said “yes,” rolled up my sleeves, and
went to work alongside Susan Kavanaugh, who now serves as our editor. I look
forward to working arm in arm with all of you...readers and advertisers
alike...exploring opportunities while providing the quality care our seniors
deserve. Until next time...
