Culinary Institute Provides Training for Those Serving Seniors

The Frist Center at Belmont University, a nonprofit institutional center dedicated to providing professional development to those who serve senior adults, will host its sixth annual Dining Services Director's Training at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, Napa Valley, April 6-8. Participants will be given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience as it applies to the special needs of cooking for senior adults in the institute's state-of-the-art teaching kitchen. A day-and-a-half of management-development skills and a half-day of wine tasting are also a part of the training, which is open to dining-service directors, dieticians, chefs and administrators from communities nationwide. Consulting Firm Merges With MS Frost

The accounting and consulting firm of Moore Stephens Lovelace (MS Lovelace) has merged the healthcare division of Moore Stephens Frost (MS Frost) into its own healthcare practice. TIME Releases Nation's First Large-Print News Magazine

More than 13 million Americans report some vision impairment, and by the year 2010, when boomers have all reached 45, that number will increase to 20 million, according to data collected by Lighthouse International. TIME Large Edition is responding to a growing population of aging Americans and other adults who need to remain informed and connected to the changing world by producing the nation's first large-print news magazine. PBS Presents Series on Care of the Dying

A four-part series entitled "On Our Own Terms: Moyers on Dying in America" and produced by Public Affairs Television Inc. will be airing on PBS, Sept. 10-13, presenting the opportunity to engage the public in a conversation of how we care for the dying. Hosted by Bill Moyers, the series presents the intimate, end-of-life journeys of more than a dozen individuals, and their families and caregivers, as they struggle to balance medical intervention with comfort and dignity at the end of life. AHCA Announces National Nursing Home Week

The American Health Care Association (AHCA) announced its theme for the 2000 National Nursing Home Week, beginning Mother's Day, May 14, and continuing through May 20: A Legacy of Quality. NASHP Report Assesses State Efforts to Assist Uninsured

A major new report from the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) examines state efforts over the past 25 years to improve access to the uninsured and finds that, absent these efforts, millions of Americans would be without insurance. Based on research findings and the insights of state health-policy officials who participated in NASHP's December 1999 Flood Tide Forum, the report, Access for the Uninsured: Lessons from 25 Years of State Initiatives, is designed to provide both an assessment of past and current reforms as well as guidance for future efforts at both the state and federal level. NCAL Publishes Annual State Regulatory Review

The National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) recently published the Assisted Living State Regulatory Review 2000, a source of new information on the ever-increasing and changing regulations of assisted-living facilities at the state level. Assisted-living providers and industry watchers can use this resource to understand the influences affecting this evolving long-term-care alternative that specializes in services to promote seniors' independence. The diverse mix of terminology, settings and available services for consumers is provided in easy-to-read state summaries. The new review is based on the applicable statutes and regulations in each state and includes such categories as agency contact names and numbers, licensure terms, scope of care, admission and discharge requirements, medication management, physical plant requirements and staffing requirements. Healthcare Providers Web Savvy, but Underutilize Internet

Small and mid-sized healthcare providers are using the Internet at a growing rate with business research the primary use for the majority of these companies, according to the latest survey of business trends by the George S. May International Co., a Park Ridge, Ill.-based management-consultant firm. The study shows that e-commerce (transacting business on the web) is being accomplished by half of the businesses of this size.

Survey results also show that 90 percent of mid-size and small businesses use the web for business research and obtaining information, but the number that use the Internet for business transactions drops to 53 percent, with 55 percent using the net for purchasing and another 50 percent for selling. However, while 87 percent consider themselves to be very or some degree computerized, almost 20 percent say they have little or no use for computers. May International has noted that while the vast majority of the participants are not using the Internet to its full extent. e-MEDx and Haelan Group Form Partnership for New Software Product

e-MEDx Inc., a provider of Web-based care-management solutions, has signed an agreement with The Haelan Group, a developer of health-assessment science techniques, to jointly develop and deploy a new disease-management application, Predictive Health Assessment (e-PHA). The new software product is part of e-MEDx's growing suite of e-health applications for employers, providers, payers and portals. Using the program, care-management organizations can assess the health of their population and forecast those individuals with the highest potential for high-cost health conditions.
